Home Remedies for Vomiting

Vomiting in Ayurveda referred as “Chardi or Vaman”, it is primarily triggered  by vitiation of “Kapha” although it involve “Vata” and “Pitta”

According to Ayurveda vomiting is a condition arising from aggravated doshas affecting the stomach. Initial line of treatment obviously lies in settling down the stomach.  Ayurveda involves natural remedies, home remedies, dietary modification and therapeutic remedies for treatment. Vomiting is classified in to 5 types:

a. Caused by vitiation of the Vata. (Dryness, headache)

b. Caused by vitiation of Pitta. (Burning sensation, yellow vomit)

c. Caused by vitiation of Kapha. (Lethargic, thick white vomit)

d. Caused by vitiation of all the 3 doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha, with mixed symptoms.

e. Caused by worm infestation or unpleasant sights, smells, touches, taste and sounds.

Characteristic Symptom

  • Forceful expulsion of the gastric contents through the mouth.
  • The contents of the vomit may have food particles, bile, water or in some cases blood.
  • The presence of blood reveals bleeding from the stomach, small intestine or the food pipe.
  • Dehydration may result in extreme cases.
  • The cause may be intake of toxic food, pregnancy, intestinal worm, or mental illness.

Vomiting Home Remedies

  1. Take ashes of small cardamoms mixed with honey.
  2. Slowly suck a piece of lemon or ice.
  3. Burn the bark of the peepul tree: then extinguish it in water. Strain this water in a linen cloth and take it every 6 to 8 hours to get relief.
  4. Simple chew 1 or 2 cardamom and slowly swallow the juice.
  5. Make a decoction by boiling cardamoms along with some mint leaves; add some mishri. Take in small quantities at regular interval. In case of children, pound cardamom and make them lick the powder mixed in a little honey.
  6. Make a paste of parched rice diluted in water; add the powders of cloves and cardamom and sugar.
  7. In case of nausea take equal quantities of powdered fennel and dried mint leaves. Boil these in water till one forth remain. Take this decoction 3 to 4 times a day.
  8. A decoction prepared by boiling equal parts of fennel and thyme seeds is particularly beneficial for small babies in treating vomiting and indigestion.
  9. Pound fresh leaves of Jamun to extract the juice. Take 10 to 20 to treat nausea and vomiting.
  10. Drink lemonade.
  11. To the freshly extracted juice of tulsi, add equal quantities of the juice of mint and ginger; for better result add saunf water as well. Take this mixture in every 4 hours for relief.
