Yoga Sutra define Asana as a posture that is comfortable, easy & steady.
Yoga teaches that each posture reflect a mental attitude and benefits the internal and external body. There are eighty four Asanas commonly used by Yogis, but we can benefits from a dozen of them. Many Asanas have animal name, as Yogis devised each Asana by observing the movements of animals and how their instinct in wild influenced their bodily movements. Observe, how your pet dog and cat move their body, on awakening from sleep. They instinctively stretch, arch the spine in both directions and then relax.
Asana are also based on a sound knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. In Ayurveda diseases can be cure faster with accompany yoga practice. The Yogis knew exactly that placing of the body in certain position would stimulate specific nerves, organs, and glands. The inverted postures increases the circulation of blood to the brain, thus stimulating the brain nerves, increasing vitality and brain functions so as to build intelligence and memory.
The Yogis knew the vulnerability of the spine and that as we age, the spine loses its flexibility and deteriorate. This further lead deterioration of the organs and the glands and the body gets diseased. The Asanas have a profound effect on the thyroid, pituitary, pineal, adrenal, pancreas and sex glands. The function of these glands is to secrets powerful hormones that control a youngsters growth, weight, size. They also determine the metabolism, vitality and emotional state. Apart from this, Asanas strengthen the heart and help in proper digestion and assimilation of the food that is eaten. The stretching that is done with each Asana lubricates joints, making it supple and release all toxin from the area, thus preventing its stiffness.
Apart from all this, Yoga therapy posture help teenagers to balance their emotions, relax their mind, strengthen their concentration and improve their memory. Regular practice of Yoga Asana helps to clear skin from pimples. Regular Yoga Asana helps to deal with problem due to hormonal imbalances experienced on sexual maturing. Certain poses helps alleviating menstrual cramps, increase in height, and in giving perfect body.
The Asana are based on 5 basic principles and these are
- Use of gravity: The inverted posture such as shoulder stand take advantages of gravity to increase the flow of blood to the desired body part and activate thyroid gland.
- Stretching muscle: This causes increase in blood supply to the muscles and relaxes muscles. It also takes pressure off the nerves in specific area. This stretching is involved in all Asanas and benefits the body.
- Organ massage: The position of Asana causes a squeeze in action on a specific gland or organ, stimulating that part of body.
- Deep breathing: While doing and retaining the Yoga posture practice we breath deeply and exhale slowly moving abdomen. This increases oxygen supply to the pressed organ or gland, thereby enhancing the effect of Asana.
- Concentration: While doing Yoga posture practice, focus the attention on the organ or gland. This brings the mind in to use and increase the blood circulation in the area; but more importantly, increases the power of concentration. This has a effect on our life. We start to live in awareness and mind gets less distracted by external events.
Therefore, it becomes important for all teenagers to practice Yoga regularly under Yoga experts supervision as it will help them to stay in perfect balance in this fast changing world. They will excel in all that they do and will be in a better position to face challenges in their life with sound mind and body.
