Home Remedies for Bronchitis

Bronchitis characterized by persistent coughing and mucus production, due to bronchial tubes which are the passage to carry air to the lungs get inflamed. Characteristic Symptom

  • Inflammation of the bronchi of the lungs.
  • Initially there is an irritation, dry cough along with chest pain or discomfort.
  • Later cough is persistent and productive with mucoid, viscous or blood streaked sputum.
  • A sensation of tightness in the chest, difficulty in taking a breath and wheezing sound in chest.
  • Mild to moderate fever, malaise and sore throat.

Ayurvedic View

In Ayurvedic medicine Bronchitis is considered to be a disorder of the respiratory systems caused by an imbalance of the Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas. There are five types of Bronchitis have been identified in Ayurvedic point of view:

  1. Vitiation of Vata or the air body humor causes its movement towards the upper part of the head and neck, and produces a cough which sounds like torn bamboo.
  2. Caused by vitiation of Pitta or fire humor.
  3. Caused by vitiation of Kapha or phlegm humor.
  4. Owning to external factor the distorted air causes an injury in the chest region and cough is accompanied with blood.
  5. Owning to impairment of digestion, an imbalance in all the three humors causes the disease.

Bronchitis Home Remedies

  1. Take one tablespoon of turmeric powder twice  a day along with warm water.
  2. Grind dried ginger, black pepper and long pepper together in equal quantities and take twice a day with honey.
  3. Extract juice from leaves of Vasa and take 1 to 2 tablespoon with honey.
  4. Boil a glass of milk with a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Drink this milk twice or thrice daily to soothe the condition.
  5. For chronic bronchitis, a decoction prepared from the herbs Vasa, pipali and mulethi is very effective. Take approx. 20 to 30 ml warmed, twice a day.
  6. In natural home remedies bronchitis, local massage of a warm paste of Hing on the chest also proves useful.
  7. Ayurvedic remedies bronchitis for acute as well as chronic you will benefits with regular use of ginger. Add few drop of the juice to your daily tea.
  8. In natural remedies bronchitis Betel leaf is another herb that is helpful. As a Ayurvedic home remedies try mixing approx. 5 to 10 ml juice extracted from betel leaves with freshly ground basil, mint and ginger. Add about 4 to 5 pounded peppercorns to the paste. Take half tablespoon of this preparation twice along with some honey.
  9. The leaves of basil act as an expectorant and help in removing phlegm. The juice of  basil leaves is recommended in treatment of bronchitis home remedies.
  10. The medicinal properties of sesame seeds help relieve chest congestion associated with bronchitis. Add half a teaspoon of sesame seed powder to two tablespoons of water and have the mixture twice daily.
  11.  Add a teaspoon of salt water to a glass of warm water and gargle with it several times a day to soothe the throat inflammation and to cut through the mucus that is causing irritation to the throat.
  12. Inhalation steam break up the mucus and enable easy expectoration. It relaxes chest muscle. Menthol or eucalyptus oil can be added in the warm water for steaming.
