Home Remedies for Indigestion

Indigestion is known as “Ajiran” in Ayurveda, indigestion is related to impairment of Agni (digestive fire)

Disturbed Agni (digestive fire) causes ‘Ajiran‘ in body. It is inability to digest food properly leading formation of Ama ( undigested metabolic toxins ) in body. Ayurvedic treatment for indigestion focuses on restoring digestive balance, eliminating toxins, and strengthening gut health.

Characteristic Symptom

  • Pain in the upper abdomen; belching; wind formation; abdominal distension; false hunger; nausea and vomiting.
  • Off and on changes in the bowels.
  •  Sometimes heart burn and continuous feeling of discomfort.

Ayurvedic View

6 types of indigestion explained in Ayurveda:

a. Caused by vitiation of vata humor, it is called ‘Vishtabdha Ajiran’. 

b. Caused by vitiation of pitta humor, it is called ‘Vidagdha Ajiran’.

c. Caused by vitiation of kapha humor known as ‘Aama Ajiran’.

d. When food is not digested properly, ‘Rasshesha Ajiran’.

e. When it takes whole day to digest food, this is ‘Dinpaki Ajiran’.

f. Sometimes there is natural indigestion of the previous meal; this is ‘Prakrit Ajiran’.

Indigestion Home Remedies 

  1. Chew a piece of ginger mixed with powdered rock salt before each meal.
  2. Buttermilk mixed with powdered Hing and black salt can be taken 3 to 4 times in a day.
  3. Mix lemon juice with a pinch each of powdered black pepper, roasted cumin seeds and black salt and take 2 or 3 times a day.
  4. Take a mixture of equal quantities of powdered dried ginger, rock salt and black pepper along with a glass of warm water before meal.
  5. Pound seeds of the large cardamom and take approx.. 1 to 3 gm of the powder, preferably with some water.
  6. The juice of Karela even in small amount helps in indigestion.
  7. A small quantity of freshly pounded black pepper with some buttermilk gives quick relief.
  8. Pound a piece of cinnamon and in a glass of water. Take this drink at least half an hour before meal.
  9. A decoction prepared by boiling equal parts of fennel seed and thyme seeds is particularly beneficial for small babies who have indigestion.
  10. Take leaves of mint, either in raw form or made in to chutney.
