Yoga Asana for Asthma

Asthma is caused by imbalance of Vata and Kapha doshas, which leads to breathlessness and obstruction in respiratory system. The most common symptom in this disease is that the patient feels difficulty in breathing. There is a strain in exhaling the air. Asthma is mainly a disorder of the bronchioles. There is constriction of the bronchiole which disturb the normal ratio of inspiration and expiration. Because of congestion of the blood vessel of the bronchial lining the expiration begin to get prolonged and difficult.

The treatment with Yoga requires:

The yogic system of the treatment of this disease necessitates doing three thing :

“Regular practice of Pranayama & Asana, proper diet, observance to certain principles and advice”

The selection of Pranayama and Asana is made according to the need of body in this disease. As already mentioned, the disease is primarily of the lungs and reparatory system. Therefore, the pranayama and asana have to be so selected as their practice would restore the normal health of lungs and the whole of the respiratory system. Keeping this aim in view the following pranayama and asanas are recommended.

Proper Diet 

The Asthmatic should eat a balanced diet which includes salad, fresh fruits, green vegetable, germinated gram and saag in their daily meals. They should eat four times a day. The breakfast should consist of fruit juice, fresh fruits, a handful of germinated gram, wheat bread and green vegetables.

The lunch and dinner should begin with salad. Salad eaten should be about a cupful mixed with salt and pepper and lemon juice or with salad dressing. After eating salad they should eat soup, wheat bread, pulse, any kind of saag and some fresh green vegetables. The non vegetarian can eat fish and liver if they like. Meat of any type should be avoided for a period of three months.

In the afternoon, some light refreshment should be taken such as fresh fruits, cheese, cake, or salted biscuit.
